Abbey College Birmingham Student a Cut Above the Rest…

Submitted by on March 11, 2016 – 6:40 am |

Jas-Priya wins Dissection AwardAbbey College Birmingham has presented its very first dissection award as part of a new scheme to provide students with the extra skills required to help students stand out on medical university applications.

The new dissection club, which has proven to be incredibly popular at the Saint Paul’s Square College, has been designed to help students hone in on their science skills and knowledge.

From rats to cockroaches, the students have become familiar with the anatomy of many creatures and have mastered their surgery techniques.

Upper sixth student, Jas-Priya Randhawa, (18), impressed teachers so much with her knowledge and eagerness to learn, that she has been awarded the first Certificate of Competence Dissection.

The Psychology, Chemistry and Biology student who hopes to go on and study Zoology, was given the inaugural prize for showing an ability to locate and safely use the correct tools for different types of dissections.

She also made sound attempts at extracting tissues of interest from specimens and then followed up on the anatomy of different organs, competently relating these to the functions in the overall specimen.

To add to her abilities, Jas-Priya also supported her fellow students in understanding the anatomy of samples and guided them in completing the dissection procedure successfully, showing her impressive teamwork skills.

Jas-Priya said: “The dissection club has been a great experience as not only was I able to enhance my practical skills but I also gained knowledge about dissecting, which has been very helpful to my studies. Being part of the club has been one of the biggest highlights for me as a student at Abbey College Birmingham.”

The dissection club is one of many extra-curricular activities that the independent college has to offer, which helps students to stand out. The college’s upcoming open day on 19th March will demonstrate many of these whilst showing parents and students the truly personalised learning experience and excellent facilities the college has to offer.

Acting Principal Shahzad Hussain commented: “Jas-Priya is an excellent student and not only has she shone in the dissection club, she has proved that she has the qualities of a leader by guiding her fellow students through the processes of dissecting and analysing.

“These extra-curricular classes are important if a student wants to stand out on entry forms and they support medical or biology careers. It is great that we are able to offer classes such as this to our students, with our excellent facilities and personalised learning structure we can really help them go above and beyond the standard requirements for a university application.”
