College students respond to local twins’ DIY SOS …

nts have helped create a new home for Romanian orphan twins.
South Leicestershire College’s Painting & Decorating students renovated the brothers’ home following the death of their adoptive mother to cancer at 42, the second time in their lives they’ve been orphaned.
Ionuts and Dumitru left their Romanian orphanage as babies, where they had numerous health problems, when they were adopted by Ruth Langham from Leicestershire.
Now 24, they continue to have significant health difficulties and were overjoyed that students from the college volunteered to help renovate their home.
With free paint donated by Dulux and support from Lincrusta’s Technical Manager, Andy Sarson, the entire house was decorated allowing the twins to lead a relatively normal life.
& Decorating student Jordan Buckley (17) said: “It was really nice to be able to use my painting skills to help somebody as deserving as the twins and give them their home back.”
One of the twins, Dumitru said: “When we heard that some students were going to decorate our home, we were very surprised! People do not normally help us like that.”
The twins’ adoptive Grandad was also full of praise saying: “What a fantastic job the students made of the decorating and it was nice to hear them say how much they enjoyed these projects, especially when they were helping people like the lads.”
SLC students regularly carry out work experience through community based projects. Marion Plant OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of South Leicestershire College commented; “One of the great aspects of our construction courses here at South Leicestershire College is that we are able to offer our students valuable and rewarding work experience on projects such as these within the local community. These projects help to increase the employability skills of our students, essential for them to attract work in todays’ competitive jobs market.”
