College trains firefighters in large animal rescue…
Two groups of firefighters from Hereford and Worcestershire Fire Service are now qualified AR2 Animal Rescue Responders following a course at Warwickshire College’s Moreton Morrell centre in July.
Large animal rescues are common, but can be risky for both firefighter and the animal. This is why the course has been created for teams expected to carry out animal rescues.
Following classroom-based theory lessons and handling real animals (including containment, handling and restraint techniques), the firefighters put their learning into action rescuing a life-size model horse from a variety of situations.
The model horse’s steel frame weighs in at 200kg and it has fully positionable legs, enabling the recreation of some of the most common situations horses might find themselves in – for example stuck in water or trapped by a fence.
Course leader Debs Coxall from Warwickshire College said, “Large animal rescues can be dangerous for both animal and rescuer, so we’re really pleased to be offering these courses to the fire service.
“We show the firefighters how to take the tack and bridle off, how to rescue a rider if they are stuck and how to reassure the animal throughout. They are then able to carry out the ‘rescue’ of the horse from a number of situations.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to our own equine and agriculture departments for their hard work and help to make the courses happen.
“We would also like to thank National Grid who sponsored the purchase of the model horse which is vital for this type of training as it enables the firefighters to experience a large animal rescue in a safe environment.”
