DW Sports Fitness logoWhy exercise can boost productivity in the workplace

When productivity is lacking in the workplace you may think of bringing employees into the boardroom to give them an inspiring speech. But have you considered taking them to the gym instead?

We are all aware of the benefits that exercise can have on our lives by reducing stress levels, increasing fitness and promoting a more positive lifestyle. Of course, most business owners would prefer that their employees participate in positive activities outside of the workplace, but many do not realise that regular exercise can directly improve work performance too.

Recently, more and more companies have recognised the link between performance at work and exercise, which is why they are investing in gym memberships for their staff. Here are just some of the benefits that exercising can bring to your workforce.

Reduces workplace stress

Long working hours, tight deadlines and heavy workloads have created an immense amount of pressure for many employees. According to research by the Health and Safety Executive, 39% of all work-related illnesses are related to stress and anxiety.

Exercise can help to lower levels of stress. Calming hormones called endorphins are naturally produced throughout exercise, which work to boost your mood. It’s natural for employees to feel stressed during working hours, but remember that prevention is better than cure. Ensuring that employees resolve any stress caused by work in a healthy way, such as working out at the gym, instead of taking it home and suffering is essential to promote a happy work environment.

Boosts productivity

Do you ever notice those people who go to the gym in the morning and still manage to have boundless energy throughout the entire day?

Regular exercise not only makes you feel happier, but it has also been proven to enhance brain functionality, therefore making people more productive. Research by the British Medical Journal found that aerobic exercise, anything that increases your heart rate and makes you sweat, appeared to improve the size of the hippocampus, which is the area of the brain linked to memory and learning.

Bonding activity

It’s important that your employees work together harmoniously, for the sake of their own job satisfaction and to make office life smoother. Employees will be much more likely to help each other out and share ideas if they have a good relationship. But due to hectic work schedules it’s often difficult to arrange the time for employees to bond with one another, as it wouldn’t be feasible to sacrifice the workload not being completed for the sake of your employees having a friendly chat.

Encouraging your employees to attend the gym together is a sociable activity that the entire workforce can get involved in. Employees can bond over shared activities and work with one another towards a shared goal. Enrolling employees in group classes such as circuit training, spinning or Zumba, is a fantastic way to encourage good relationships, get fit and have some fun. You can find out more information regarding group exercise classes here.
