Love Energy Awards winners announced…
It’s that time of year again, where the most energy-savvy organisations are rewarded and celebrated for their green efforts – the winners of the second Love Energy Savings Awards have been chosen.
The annual Awards, launched by business energy price comparison specialists Love Energy Savings, aims to showcase businesses from across the UK who are working hard to become more energy efficient.
Here are the four winners of this year’s Love Energy Savings Awards 2016:
SME Saver – Élan Hair Design
Ever since 2012, Élan Hair Design has worked hard to gain a reputation as the most eco-friendly salon in the country. The premises has undergone a £250,000 refurbishment to cut carbon emissions and waste production, including: solar panels fitted to the roof to generate clean electricity; an air-source heat pump and radiators for heating; composting hair clippings and other biodegradable waste; diverting 95% of their waste from landfill; buying only carbon-neutral furniture.
Their efforts show that it is possible to go above and beyond even if you are a small business. Every little helps in the fight against climate change.
Élan Hair Design will win a prize of £500 from the sponsors of this category, Scottish Power.
Super Saver – Bolton Market
Last year’s winners Bolton Market certainly haven’t been resting on their laurels after emerging victorious in the Innovative Saver category in 2015.
This year they have upped their game even further and introduced some profound changes to help reduce their energy consumption to win the Super Saver category. All lighting has been changed to LED lighting with sensors where possible. The old glass roof panels have been replaced with polycarbonate ones to reflect heat, with solar panels also fitted to two roof elevations. Their work has resulted in a huge reduction in energy wastage, consumption and running costs.
Bolton Market’s continuing dedication towards becoming more energy efficient is clear. For their efforts, they will be awarded a £600 cash prize from the category’s sponsor EDF Energy.
Innovative Saver – Ian Hazel Funerals
The family-run business Ian Hazel Funerals now derives at least 70% of its electricity from the 78 solar panels that were recently installed on the roof. It was part of a major overhaul of their premises, which also included the introduction of rainwater harvesting, heat recovery through a mechanical ventilation system, and the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting and motion sensors.
Ian Hazel Funerals will be awarded a £600 cash prize from this category’s sponsor British Gas.
Star of the Future – University of Reading
The University of Reading has taken an innovative approach to becoming greener. They have drastically reduced their carbon emissions by installing a fume cupboard in their science labs. This potentially huge source of emissions allows the students to continue working as they do, whilst simultaneously taking a big leap forward for the environment.
For their commitment to long-term carbon reduction, the University of Reading will receive a £500 prize from sponsor npower.
Phil Foster, Managing Director of Love Energy Savings, commented on the announcement of the winners:
“It was an incredibly difficult task to select the finalists of this year’s Love Energy Savings Awards – the standard of entrants was incredibly high. The Awards have grown substantially in their second year, and we are hoping that this will continue.
We hope that receiving the Awards not only gives the winning businesses the recognition they deserve for their efforts to become more environmentally friendly, but that they also inspire others to follow in their footsteps. Everyone can play their part, and these Awards prove that we can all make changes to help create a better future for us all.”
