Warwickshire students make further education their first choice…
With GCSE results day just three weeks away, a new report from the Department for Education shows that further education is still a top choice for school-leavers, with more Warwickshire students choosing it than the national average.
The publication of the first national Key Stage 4 (post-16) Destinations statistics shows the percentage of students continuing their education in school, further education or sixth-form college or higher education institution, and the percentage training through an apprenticeship or work-based learning. The figures relate to students leaving school in 2011.
Overall, 89% of young people were in sustained education or employment/training. Of those in education, 36% were at school sixth forms, 33% at further education colleges, 12% at sixth form colleges and 4% on an apprenticeship in these institutions.
In Warwickshire, 90% of students were in sustained education or employment/training, just slightly higher than the national figure.
Further education is much more popular with Warwickshire students – 37% of them chose an FE college, compared with 33% nationally.
John Rees, Deputy Principal of Warwickshire College said, “It’s that time of year when school-leavers are making those decisions about where they want to go, so it’s really encouraging to see that more young people in Warwickshire are choosing further education than the national average.
“As an entrepreneurial Gazelle college, we are committed to equipping all our students with more than just qualifications, enabling them to develop employability skills and real-world business experience so they are ‘job-ready’ when they leave us. What makes us unique is that we offer this to all our students, including those studying academic qualifications such as A Levels, so they get more than they would at a school or traditional sixth form.
“We believe that it is the combination of high quality teaching and the extra skills and experience we offer that is making Warwickshire students choose FE for a successful future.”
Schools Minister David Laws explained why the data was being published:
“We are publishing this data so people can see for themselves how different schools, colleges and local authorities perform. Parents have more information than ever before on which to base decisions.
“Some students will be aiming to get a job after college, others will be hoping to win a place at a great university. But all schools and colleges must ensure they deliver for all their students, whatever that student’s target.”
