West Midlands Businesses Win London 2012 Contracts

Submitted by carly.sumner 6 Comments

-More than 200 companies across the West Midlands have won business contracts for the London 2012 Games.

£461 million worth of business has been bagged by firms in nearly all of the region’s 59 parliamentary constituencies.

Jim Johnston, Business Manager for the 2012 Games, said: “This is a remarkable achievement by West Midlands businesses and means we’ve sprinted past our ambitious £400 million target well ahead of the Games-time deadline.

“The West Midlands business community has truly embraced the opportunity and helped to net the regional economy more than its fair share of Olympic profits and related jobs.”

A number of these successes have been made possible through the CompeteFor procurement system, which has been set up by the London 2012 organisations to act as an online brokerage system between potential suppliers across the country and London 2012 buyers.

The West Midlands has seen 9,500 s using the system so far, creating the fourth highest total in the country.

The type of local businesses securing contracts vary from Birmingham’s Lloyds Engineering Services who have worked on a sewage and pumping station on Olympic Park to Golden Bear Toys Ltd, a Shropshire-based company that have designed and supplied a range of mascots for the event.

Mr Johnston continued:

“The fact that contracts have been won by businesses in nearly every part of the region is also hugely impressive and reinforces the West Midlands’ collective determination to compete for and win new business, both London 2012 Games contracts, and new opportunities emerging as the economy begins to recover.”
