C-app-uccino In Your Pocket?
- A Birmingham-based coffee shop has become the first in the UK to launch an iPhone app which allows people to get their caffeine fix quicker.
Urban Coffee Company, based in the Colmore Business District, developed the app so that people could order ahead and save the small wait that comes with every drink being made from fresh. Using this tool, someone can order their tea or coffee and then simply go down and pick it up, without having to queue.
“We brew our speciality filter coffees freshly for each cup, which means a short wait is inevitable. We found that more and more customers started calling the store to pre-order their drinks – especially for large or complicated orders – so we decided to devise an online ordering facility to speed the process up.” said Simon Jenner, founder of Urban Coffee Company.
“We believe this is the first coffee ordering app in the UK as apps available from other coffee shops concentrate more on explaining menus and locating stores rather than simply being able to order a coffee before you get there.”
“We’re very proud to be the first company to successfully implement this type of application in the UK, in the process beating off the big boys like Starbucks and Caffè Nero. We’ve always recognised that innovation is a tool which will allow us to punch above our weight, which is essential for a small and entrepreneurial store like ourselves.”
The application itself was developed by open source software developer Scott Remnant, who is also Birmingham-based and a regular Urban Coffee Company customer, and it has seen over 200 downloads since it was put on the iTunes Store three weeks ago.
In addition, Urban Coffee Company will be opening a second outlet in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, which will be ready for business next month.
