Music students given real-world insight by record industry luminaries…

Submitted by BIP Team No Comment

Mark Thorley Coventry UniversityStudents on Coventry University’s music technology course gained a fascinating insight into working in the music and recording sector when they heard from a panel of industry heavyweights.

The industry panel was part of a Higher Education Academy (HEA) funded research project at Coventry University designed to examine the impact of involving employers in student portfolio development.

Students spent the afternoon learning of the panel’s extensive experience, and are now set to have their work assessed by the experts.

The panel included record producer George Shilling, who has worked with artists including Ocean Colour Scene and James Brown, and Marco Migliari, who has engineered Crowded House and Massive Attack.

It also included the Music Producers Guild (MPG) ‘Mastering Engineer of the Year’, Mandy Parnell, as well as Mike Whitcroft who designed many of the studios in the BBC’s MediaCityUK facility in Salford.

Mark Thorley (pictured), head of music technology at Coventry University, said:

“It is rare for students to get access to people of this calibre individually, let alone all together. The experience was one which students will benefit from for a long time to come.”

As part of a Higher Education Academy funded initiative, the project will benefit not only Coventry University students but also the wider academic community, as it will point to better ways of embedding employers and practitioners in the student learning experience.
